Indie RPGs that respect your time
Big-budget RPGs love to make you wait. Ten hours before the good stuff, sprawling maps you'll never fully explore. On a phone, in short bursts, that model just doesn't work. Indie developers have quietly figured this out.
Emberfall Saga is the poster child here. It hands you an interesting party and a real conflict within the first twenty minutes, and its grid-based battles are short but demand thought. You can play it three encounters at a time and never feel lost when you come back.
The trick these smaller games pull is trimming fat rather than adding depth. Fewer systems, but every one of them matters. That's a harder design job than it looks, and when it works the whole thing feels tight instead of thin.
If you've bounced off mobile RPGs because they felt like second jobs, give the smaller ones a chance. They tend to know exactly what they are and stop before they wear out their welcome.
